Heritage Walk & Sketching in Kanchipuram
We hosted two student researchers from Mauritius for an immersive heritage walk through the ancient temple town of Kanchipuram. The tour focused on exploring early Pallava dynasty architecture, tracing the evolution from simple stone structures to complex structural temples.
Key Highlights:
Pallava Architectural Wonders: Explored landmark monuments like the 8th-century Kailasanathar Temple, studying its sandstone relief carvings, pyramidal vimana, and signature yali (rearing lion) base pillars.
On-Site Sketching: The students captured the intricate geometries, Somaskanda panels, and decorative niches through live field sketches, documenting structural details up close.
Heritage Awareness: Discussed the historical context of royal Pallava patronage, early Dravidian design language, and modern conservation efforts to preserve sandstone monuments.
The visit combined historical learning with active artistic documentation, raising awareness about South India’s rich architectural legacy.
